Varsity Scores 52-6 Season Opening
Win over Hornets |
|
|
There is a saying that to
celebrate the greatest triumphs, first, you must suffer great
struggle.
The Indians year of struggle came in 2009. After starting the
season 4-0 and peaking at number three in the state, the Indians
collapsed. Behind injuries and youthful play, the Indians gave up
222 points in the conference divisional season, losing their last
five games and finishing 4-5.
If 2010 is going to be a successful season for "Gang Green", then
it's going to be the leadership of the seniors that will show the
Indians back to the postseason once again.
This years senior class includes 13 seniors, including five seniors
entering their third years of Varsity experience. They include
quarterback and defensive back Matt Najacht, running back and
linebacker Shayne Carlson, offensive and defensive lineman Austin
Snedden and Ryne Bisnett, along with tight end and outside
linebacker Phillip Woodward. However, Snedden is lost for the season
following a previous injury last season and will be a big hole for
the Indians to fill.
Second-year seniors include wide receiver and defensive back Brant
Koshar, offensive lineman and linebacker Anthony VanHuffel,
offensive and defensive lineman Anthony Carpenter and T.J.
Summerhill, tight end and outside linebacker Manny Apreza and
offensive and defensive lineman Joe
Baumeister.
First-year seniors include running back and outside linebacker
Orlando Calderon, offensive and defensive lineman James Schmalfeldt
and wide receiver and defensive back Steve Melton.
The junior class stands 13 strong as well, matching the senior
class in numbers, but with less experience. The lone junior entering
his third-year of Varsity Football is kicker Juan Perez.
Six juniors with previous Varsity game experience are on this years
team, as well. They include offensive lineman and linebacker John
Scherer, offensive and defensive lineman Adan Barajas, Andrew
Garcia, offensive lineman and outside linebacker Jared Meachum and
offensive and defensive linemen Eric Perez and Noey Lopez.
The remaining six juniors enter their first season on the Varsity
squad. Those six include quarterback and safety Konner Bulat, tight
end and outside linebacker Zach Clauser, wide receiver and defensive
back Josh Ryan, offensive and defensive lineman Patrick Hammel and
wide receiver and defensive back Ethan Koshar. Also joining the team
is transfer student, Justin Granke, who plays wide receiver and
defensive back.
The team is rounded out by four sophomores, with one, Gareth
MacMillan, having playing time last year. MacMillan plays running
back and linebacker for the Indians.
The remaining three sophomores on the team are running back and
defensive back Zeke Calvillo, running back and linebacker Tony
Kucharski and tight end and offensive lineman Jimmy Mullins. All
three were members of last seasons 3-6 Junior Varsity squad.
For the fifth season is succession, David Janicki returns as the
head of the Indian tribe. He will be assisted once again by Terry
Manning, DeLane Overton, Doug Paran and Andrew Hubbard. Hubbard
joins the Indian staff after being hired this summer as the new
Athletic Director and Assistant High School Principal and was
previously a head coach in the Cassopolis program. |
